Hey everyone. Last night for New Year's Eve (La nochevieja), me and my friends Matt and Emily rung in the new year at Puerta del Sol (Almost the Times Square of Madrid so to speak). We got there at around 7:00 p.m. because they close the metro early and we wanted to make sure we get a spot in the main plaza. For a few hours we walked around trying to find a bar that was open to hang out for a bit. Everything was either closed or was only open to private parties. At around 10:00 we made our way to the plaza to get a spot for the festivities. It was basically a gigantic party in the plaza with loud music and lights everywhere. We found a few Americans and some English speaking French people to talk with before the big moment. In Spanish tradition, everyone eats a grape a second for the final 12 seconds of the year. As the clock ticked closer to midnight there was a light show and projection on the clock tower. As the final seconds ticked down to 2010, we all shoved our faces with grapes as the entire plaza was lit up with fireworks and celebratory shouts. Me and Matt even sang the Star Spangled Banner a few times throughout the night. After the clocked turned to 2010, we walked around the city just jam-packed full of people out celebrating with colorful wigs and light-up glasses. This was my first New Year in a major city and it was an incredible experience. Definitely my best New Year's Eve party ever.
